State & Local Tax Manager
SALT Manager (State and Local Tax) (Zwaagdijk-Oost, Netherlands)
Do you want to take ownership of US State & Local Tax for one of Europe’s fastest-growing retailers as we expand into the United States?
Are you a hands-on SALT specialist who can translate complex, fast-changing state and local tax rules into practical guidance for the business?
At Action, we are looking for a SALT Manager who will take ownership of our US State & Local Tax matters, with a strong focus on sales & use tax, nexus, state income and franchise taxes, compliance, audits, and tax technology.
Your daily tasks
As SALT Manager, you are responsible for managing Action’s US State & Local Tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions. You combine deep technical expertise with a pragmatic approach, supporting business expansion while ensuring strong compliance, controls, and risk management.
You will:
- Oversee sales & use tax compliance across all relevant US jurisdictions, including accurate tax determination, collection, reporting, remittance, and exemption certificate management.
- Monitor and assess economic and physical nexus, including the impact of store openings, e-commerce activities, and the logistics footprint.
- Identify and quantify potential SALT exposures and lead remediation activities such as registrations and voluntary disclosure agreements.
- Advise the business on the SALT implications of commercial decisions, supply chain changes, pricing, expansion, and new market entries.
- Manage sales & use tax and other state/local tax audits, acting as the primary contact for tax authorities and developing defensible audit positions.
- Ensure effective use and configuration of tax determination systems and work with IT and Finance to improve data quality, automation, and tax processes.
- Identify and monitor SALT risks, embed appropriate controls within the Tax Control Framework, and ensure robust documentation and audit trails.
- Provide clear reporting on SALT risks, exposures, and regulatory developments to the Head of Tax and manage external advisors where needed.
Your team
You will be part of Group Tax and report to the Head of Tax. The role has no direct reports initially.
You will work closely with Finance, IT, Supply Chain, Commercial teams, and external tax advisors to support Action’s US activities and continued expansion.
This is you
You are a technically strong and pragmatic SALT professional who is comfortable working in a highly fragmented and fast-changing multi-state tax environment. You can analyse complex issues, translate them into clear business guidance, and take ownership from assessment through implementation.
- A Master’s degree in Tax, Accounting, or a related field.
- Around 5–10 years of relevant US State & Local Tax experience.
- Experience gained in a Big Four firm, tax advisory or law firm, and/or an in-house tax function.
- Strong experience with sales & use tax and multi-state tax environments.
- Deep technical knowledge of sales & use tax and US state/local tax regimes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex and changing tax requirements.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with Finance, IT, Supply Chain, and Commercial teams.
- A hands-on, pragmatic approach with strong attention to detail.
What success looks like
- No unexpected SALT exposures or audit surprises.
- Accurate and efficient sales tax collection and reporting.
- Early identification of nexus and compliance risks.
- Strong control over audit processes and outcomes.
- Clear ownership of SALT within the tax function.
