Data Controller (Product Data Quality)

Data Controller (Product Data Quality)

(Fulltime -38] hours per week)

Action is a fast-growing non-food discounter with more than 3,500 stores in 16 countries. As Data Controller, you make sure the product data that flows through our commerce and supply chain is correct, complete and on time. This role is for someone who takes ownership of data quality, gets to the root cause of problems, and brings the business along.

Your Role

As Data Controller, you are the end-to-end guardian of product data quality. You oversee product data across the entire value chain, from commercial agreements and product setup through supply chain execution and store operations, ensuring that the data each process depends on is accurate, complete, and right the first time.

You are not just checking data. You define which data is critical, set up quality controls and monitoring together with the business, and run our data quality management (DQM) process. When issues come in, you look for the pattern, find the root cause and make sure the process changes, so the problem does not come back.

You are the bridge between the business and IT. The business owns the data; you make sure ownership, rules and definitions are clear and followed. You do this through influence, not authority, as a trusted advisor for buying, commerce, supply chain, IT and related data teams. We will get more work, but not more people, so we count on you to find smarter ways of monitoring, including automation and AI.

What You Will Do

  • Take over and manage the full data quality management process: incidents, monitoring, trends and follow-up.
  • Define critical data elements in processes and projects, including owner, business rule, definition, timeliness and expected quality.
  • Set up data quality controls and monitoring together with the business, based on where data comes from and what users need.
  • Monitor data quality KPIs, spot trends and recurring issues, and decide when an incident becomes a structural problem.
  • Perform root cause analysis and turn findings into concrete improvement actions in the process.
  • Apply and develop Action's data quality framework: completeness, validity, consistency, timeliness, availability and first time right.
  • Maintain and develop our data dictionary and data catalog.
  • Act as the data expert in projects, translating process requirements into data requirements.
  • Assess the impact of proposed system solutions with IT before they are built, looking end to end across commerce and supply chain.
  • Advise the business on data risks and preventive controls, in plain language that non-data people understand.
  • Explore and introduce smarter, more efficient ways of monitoring, such as automation and AI agents.

What You Bring

You are a senior data professional who thinks in processes, not just in fields and tables. You enjoy finding out why things go wrong and fixing them for good. You influence without formal authority, explain data in a way people actually listen to, and bring stakeholders along in a natural, pleasant way.

  • 5+ years of experience in a data-related role, such as data quality, master data or data governance.
  • Proven experience running or owning a data quality process, including DQ rules, dimensions and KPIs.
  • Strong root cause analysis skills, with concrete examples of recurring issues you traced and fixed in the process.
  • The ability to map end-to-end processes and see where data breaks.
  • A solid understanding of data governance: ownership, roles, definitions, rules and agreements.
  • Experience defining and tracking KPIs and working with dashboards (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or Business Objects).
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, you are seen as a trusted advisor.
  • Knowledge of change, incident and problem management is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, Dutch is a plus.
  • Experience in supply chain, logistics or commerce, preferably in retail, wholesale, FMCG or manufacturing, is considered an advantage.
  • Experience with master data management, SAP S/4HANA or SAP EWM, or quality and compliance data is considered an advantage.

What Makes You Successful

You are driven, curious and quick to get up to speed, and then you take action. You give confident advice without being pushy: "How can I help? This is what I would recommend." You make data relevant to buyers and supply chain colleagues, and you thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment like Action.

What Do We Offer

At Action, you can make a tangible impact in one of Europe's fastest-growing retailers. You will own and shape our entire data quality process, with visibility across commerce and supply chain. You will work in a team of around 10 data controllers, each with their own focus, with a hands-on manager who welcomes new ideas on automation, AI and smarter monitoring. You will also contribute to large projects such as Tactical Planning, SAP and our future data platform.
